Steel production trends diverge in US and India

Global steel production data shows diverging trends between the United States and India. In the United States, domestic raw steel output declined last week, continuing a pattern of fluctuations that has seen production hit both multi-year highs and six-month lows over the past five weeks. Overall, US output has generally trended downward since its peak in May.

In contrast, India reported steady growth in September 2026. Raw steel output in India rose 3.4 percent year-on-year to 14.1 million tonnes, while finished steel production increased 3.7 percent compared to the same period last year. For the first half of the year (April-September 2026), India's crude steel production grew 2.9 percent to 85.1 million tonnes.

Steel prices in India saw significant increases in September. Thermo-Mechanically Treated (TMT) bar prices rose 12.6 percent month-on-month, and Hot-Rolled (HR) Coil prices increased 8 percent month-on-month.
