Steeven Mootoocurpen arrested over Financial Crimes Commission leak

Steeven Mootoocurpen, a 35-year-old man with a long criminal history, was arrested on September 2 in connection with an investigation into information leaks at the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) in Mauritius.

Authorities allege that Mootoocurpen may have attempted to pervert the course of justice. Investigators reportedly discovered highly confidential FCC documents on his mobile phone, including details regarding court orders for the assets of various traffickers. Additionally, the device contained the names, contact information, and photos of the homes of three FCC investigators.

Mootoocurpen is also suspected of involvement in threats made against the Director General of the FCC, Sanjay Dawoodarry. He was reportedly seen near Dawoodarry’s residence prior to the delivery of threatening letters and gunfire at the official's home in March.

He faces charges of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. Mootoocurpen has a prior criminal record dating back to 2010, including convictions for attempted theft, possession of cannabis seeds, and breaching bail conditions. He is also facing existing charges related to money laundering and a conspiracy involving the importation of synthetic drugs.
