Stefan Anton Messerer appointed as German Ambassador to Togo

Stefan Anton Messerer has officially been appointed as the new German Ambassador to Togo. On August 27, 2026, Messerer presented copies of his credentials to Togolese Foreign Minister Robert Dussey in Lomé.

Messerer succeeds Claudius Fischbach, whose mandate concluded in July. The new ambassador is tasked with strengthening bilateral cooperation, which spans several priority sectors including economic development, vocational training, agro-industrial transformation, decentralization, governance, health, and electrification.

Germany remains a major development partner for Togo. As of late June 2026, the German cooperation portfolio in the country, comprising both technical and financial assistance, was estimated at approximately 555.66 million euros. This partnership is implemented primarily through technical cooperation via GIZ and financial cooperation via KfW. Messerer previously held diplomatic roles in Romania and Cambodia.
