Tanzania safari plane collides with zebra, forcing emergency landing

A Sindbard Air Embraer EMB-120 safari aircraft was forced to make an emergency belly landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport on Sunday after colliding with a zebra during takeoff from the Seronera airstrip in the Serengeti National Park. The aircraft was en route to Zanzibar with 26 passengers and four crew members on board.

All 30 people on board survived the incident without injury. The zebra involved in the collision died at the scene. Following the emergency landing, which caused significant damage to the aircraft and resulted in smoke being visible at the airport, operations at Kilimanjaro International Airport were temporarily suspended.

The Tanzanian Civil Aviation Authority has launched an investigation to determine if the collision with the animal directly caused the subsequent landing gear failure. The incident has drawn attention to the proximity of flight operations to wildlife in the national park.
