Stefano Domenicali Announces More Sprint Races for Formula 1 in 2027

Formula 1 chief Stefano Domenicali confirmed that the 2027 season will feature a larger sprint‑race programme. The number of sprint weekends is set to grow from the current six to nine or ten events. A three‑year agreement has already been reached for the Italian circuit of Monza, which will host a sprint race alongside the Grand Prix from 2027 through 2029.

Domenicali said the move builds on the series’ recent growth, citing the 150,000 spectators who attended the Friday session at Silverstone as evidence that fans want more action. He noted that sprint races, introduced in 2021, have expanded from three events initially to six in 2023 and 2026, with the 2026 calendar including Shanghai, Miami, Montreal, Silverstone, Zandvoort and Singapore. Details of the expanded 2027 calendar will be released shortly, with additional venues such as Portugal and Turkey expected to return while Zandvoort may be dropped and Barcelona slated to share a slot with Spa‑Francorchamps from 2028.
