Stefanos Kasselakis withdraws political spot over music rights dispute
Greek politician Stefanos Kasselakis has removed a political video from social media platforms following a public objection from composer Stavros Xarchakos. The dispute arose because the video utilized the song ‘Na Me Thimasei’, performed by Melina Mercouri in 1965, without the composer’s authorization.
Xarchakos clarified that he has a long-standing policy of not granting permission for his musical works to be used in political materials. Following the composer's request for the immediate withdrawal of the content, the video was taken down.
In an interview on ANT1, Kasselakis expressed his respect for Xarchakos, noting a previous positive personal encounter with the composer. He also commented on the complex relationship between artists and politics in Greece, suggesting that while many avoid political affiliations, there is a tendency for individuals to seek access to politicians for professional purposes.
