Stefanos Manos, former Greek minister and reformist, dies
Stefanos Manos, a prominent and often unconventional figure in Greek politics, has passed away at the age of 86 or 87. A staunch advocate for economic liberalism and structural reforms, Manos held several key ministerial positions, including Minister of National Economy and Finance, and Minister of Environment, Planning, and Public Works.
Throughout his career, which began in Parliament in 1977 with New Democracy, he was instrumental in major Greek infrastructure projects. These include the Athens Metro contract, the design of the Attiki Odos, the development of the Spata airport, and the Rio-Antirrio bridge project. He was also noted for his role in the urban renewal of the Plaka district and the introduction of stricter environmental regulations for polluting vehicles.
Following his departure from New Democracy, Manos founded the Liberals party in 1999 and co-founded the Action party in 2009. He remained a vocal participant in public debate, consistently pushing for a smaller state, increased entrepreneurship, and public sector accountability. Political leaders and colleagues have remembered him as a reformist who often prioritized his convictions over political popularity.
