Stefany Shaheen wins New Hampshire Democratic primary

Stefany Shaheen has won the Democratic primary for New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District seat, narrowly defeating veteran Maura Sullivan. The victory comes despite limited polling that had previously suggested Shaheen was trailing in the competitive race.

Shaheen, who served on the Portsmouth City Council and the Portsmouth Police Commission, campaigned as a progressive candidate. Her mother, retiring Senator Jeanne Shaheen, was an active supporter throughout the race. Reports indicate that $740,000, or approximately 39% of Stefany Shaheen’s total campaign donations, came from individuals who had previously contributed to the Senator.

The race was highly competitive, with Sullivan’s allies running advertisements criticizing Shaheen’s political lineage. In the final stages of the campaign, Shaheen received endorsements from former Representative Carol Shea-Porter and Christian Urrutia. The seat is being contested following Rep. Chris Pappas’s decision to run for the Senate seat being vacated by Senator Jeanne Shaheen.
