Steffen Bilger criticizes Deutsche Bahn renovation pace

German Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the pace and execution of Deutsche Bahn’s corridor renovations. Speaking to ‘Spiegel’, Bilger criticized the modernization of tracks, switches, and safety technology, noting that commuter routes often face long closures without subsequent improvements in service.

While Bilger noted that significant funding is available through special assets, he pointed to historical delays in planning as a major hurdle. He set an ambitious goal for the rail network, aiming for 70 percent of long-distance trains to arrive on time by 2029.

The renovation strategy, which originally aimed to modernize 40 corridors by 2030, has faced delays and cost increases. Deutsche Bahn Chief Evelyn Palla recently indicated that the frequency of these major renovations may decrease from four per year to two or three per year.

Additionally, Bilger welcomed the planned entry of the Italian rail provider Italo into the German market, stating that competition provides advantages for customers, provided it does not reduce connectivity to smaller towns.
