Steffen Bilger addresses German rail, Autobahn, and toll policies

German Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger (CDU) has addressed several key issues regarding national infrastructure and transport policy. Regarding the rail system, Bilger described the current state of Deutsche Bahn as ‘völlig unzureichend’ (completely inadequate) and linked public frustration over rail service and long construction times to recent political shifts. He is currently pressuring Deutsche Bahn to reintroduce the family seat reservation option, which was abolished in June 2025, following significant public outcry and a petition with over 128,000 supporters.

On road policy, Bilger rejected the implementation of a general speed limit on Autobahns, arguing that such a measure would increase social division and offer little significant benefit for CO2 reduction or road safety. He instead emphasized the growth of electromobility to meet climate goals. Additionally, Bilger stated there are currently no plans to reintroduce a car toll (Pkw-Maut) for private drivers, noting that his focus remains on utilizing existing special funds to modernize infrastructure and ensure future financing.
