Steffen Bilger supports Merkel on AfD terminology and demands Bahn reforms

German Federal Minister Steffen Bilger (CDU) has expressed support for former Chancellor Angela Merkel regarding her criticism of the term ‘Brandmauer’ (firewall). Bilger noted that the term can make voters who lean toward the AfD feel excluded. He emphasized that while the CDU maintains a clear political and content-based distinction from the AfD, the specific terminology is less important than the actual demarcation from extremist views.

In his first appearance in the Bundestag, Bilger also addressed the crisis at Deutsche Bahn. He demanded improvements in punctuality, reliability, and operational efficiency in exchange for record levels of taxpayer funding. Bilger stated that bonuses for railway managers should be strictly tied to achieving these performance goals. He also noted that the implementation of corridor renovations must improve to ensure that tracks function significantly better after periods of closure.
