Bavarian heatwave sparks thunderstorms and wildfire risk

The German Weather Service warned that the start of the summer holidays in Bavaria will bring temperatures up to 38 °C, with isolated thunderstorms, heavy rain, hail and strong winds expected across the region. The heat increases the danger of large forest fires, and several ongoing blazes are already being fought by firefighters, including a lightning‑induced fire on the Hochstaufen near Bad Reichenhall.

In the neighbouring district of Freising, the Klinikum Freising and its partner teaching practices renewed their cooperation agreement for a general‑practice training network. The aim is to counter the shortage of family doctors – more than half of the 113 GPs in the district are over 55 years old – by offering structured postgraduate training and retaining young physicians in the area. The network now includes eleven teaching practices, two new GP offices in Moosburg and Au, and a neurology practice.

An international research team led by Sukho Song, Barbara Mazzolai and Mirko Kovač called for a new field of “Sustainability Robotics”. They argue that future robots must be designed to minimise energy use, avoid hard‑to‑recycle materials and reduce long‑term waste, drawing a parallel with the environmental problems of the plastic era. The proposal involves institutions such as Italy’s Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia and Switzerland’s Empa.
