Steffen Krach faces investigation amid Berlin election campaign

Steffen Krach, the SPD top candidate for the Berlin House of Representatives election, is under investigation by the Hannover Public Prosecutor's Office. The investigation involves suspicions of accepting advantages in two separate cases and suspected anti-competitive agreements in tenders, alongside violations of business secrets and confidentiality obligations.

Authorities conducted searches at Krach's residence in Berlin-Schöneberg, his offices in Hannover, and the SPD state headquarters in Berlin-Wedding. The allegations are linked to his former tenure as the Regional President of Hannover. One specific allegation involves a purported demand for a 9,900 Euro donation to the Berlin SPD state association in connection with an official proceeding.

Krach has emphatically rejected all allegations, describing them as unfounded. He stated that he has never accepted private money or party donations in his capacity as SPD chairman. The timing of the investigation has drawn scrutiny due to its proximity to upcoming elections in both Berlin and Lower Saxony.
