Stefon Diggs penalized for goalpost celebration in Commanders debut
During his debut with the Washington Commanders in a Week 1 game against the Philadelphia Eagles, wide receiver Stefon Diggs received a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for his touchdown celebration.
After catching a 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jayden Daniels to bring the score to 17-9, Diggs jumped on and hugged the goalpost. Under NFL rules, players are prohibited from using objects, including goalposts, as props during celebrations. This rule was tightened following a 2013 incident involving Jimmy Graham that caused equipment damage.
The penalty forced the Commanders to attempt a standard extra point rather than a two-point conversion attempt to tie the game. Washington successfully completed the kick, leaving the score at 17-16.
