Stefon Diggs penalized for goalpost celebration in Commanders loss

During his regular-season debut for the Washington Commanders, wide receiver Stefon Diggs incurred a costly 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for using the goalpost as a prop during a touchdown celebration. The incident occurred in the fourth quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles after Diggs caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jayden Daniels.

The penalty significantly impacted the game's outcome. Washington intended to attempt a two-point conversion to tie the score at 17, but the yardage penalty forced them to settle for a long extra-point attempt instead. The Commanders ultimately lost the game 24-22.

Diggs took full accountability for the error, stating, “Of course, I take full accountability. I want to win bad.” He explained that he momentarily forgot the NFL rule prohibiting goalpost celebrations, noting that such actions were permitted earlier in his career. Head coach Dan Quinn and quarterback Jayden Daniels emphasized the need for better situational awareness in future games.
