Tunisia faces power outages and planned fuel transport strike

Tunisia is facing dual challenges regarding its energy and transport sectors. The Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG) has announced potential rolling power outages across several regions, including Greater Tunis, Sfax, and the North-West. These interruptions, expected to last up to two hours each, are intended to balance production and consumption amid high demand caused by a heatwave.

Simultaneously, tensions are rising in the hydrocarbon transport sector. While labor unions and the General Federation of Petroleum and Chemicals initially denied any immediate strike, fuel transporters have since decided to hold a two-day strike on September 23 and 24, 2026. A formal notice is expected to be issued on August 27. The planned industrial action stems from long-standing demands regarding social security contributions and professional bonuses dating back to 2018. Unions have indicated that the delay in the strike is intended to allow time for negotiations with authorities to resolve these issues.
