STEG teacher union announces protest in Guatemala City
The Sindicato de Trabajadores y Trabajadoras de la Educación de Guatemala (STEG), led by Joviel Acevedo, has announced a national meeting and demonstration at the Plaza de la Constitución in Guatemala City on August 13.
The union is demanding that teachers currently under temporary contracts (renglones 021 and 022) be transitioned to permanent status (renglón 011). Additionally, the group is calling for the urgent approval of increased funding for school meals to Q25, the daily provision of liquid milk in schools, and the distribution of school footwear and clothing.
Beyond labor demands, the STEG intends to address national issues including fuel and basic food basket prices, as well as country-wide insecurity. While the union cites Article 33 of the Constitution regarding the right to peaceful assembly, the Ministry of Education has issued reminders regarding potential sanctions for certain types of industrial actions.
