Steinmeier calls for societal dialogue to strengthen democracy
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has called for increased societal dialogue, stating that the ability of citizens to engage in conversation is crucial for democracy. During a three-day visit to Hattingen in the Ruhr region, Steinmeier emphasized that meaningful exchange requires physical proximity, encounter, and time, rather than just rapid digital communication.
Speaking at an award ceremony for engaged citizens, the President noted that incorporating perspectives from across the country into federal politics improves decision-making, increases acceptance of policies, and strengthens trust in democratic institutions. The visit marked the conclusion of his 'Ortszeit Deutschland' series, an initiative designed to counter societal tensions by facilitating direct interaction between the head of state and citizens outside of major metropolitan areas.
