Steinmeier defends German Federal Constitutional Court at 75th anniversary
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier honored the Federal Constitutional Court during a ceremony in Karlsruhe marking its 75th anniversary. Steinmeier emphasized the court's essential role in ensuring the Basic Law is respected and enforced, describing it as a vital safeguard for the country's legal order.
During the event, Steinmeier issued a warning against what he termed ‘vulgar democrats’ who seek unlimited power by claiming to represent the ‘will of the people’ while disregarding constitutional limits. He argued that those who oppose the liberal democratic order are unfit to serve as judges. Referencing political developments in Poland, Hungary, and the United States, he stressed that true democracy requires adherence to principles such as equal opportunity, minority rights, and the political neutrality of state institutions.
