Stelios Kazantzidis: The legacy of a Greek folk music icon

Stelios Kazantzidis, a defining voice of Greek folk music, was born on August 29, 1931, in Nea Ionia. His music resonated deeply with the working class, refugees, and those facing economic hardship, addressing themes of poverty, exile, and injustice.

Kazantzidis began his professional career in Kifisia in 1950. Following early recordings with Columbia, he achieved significant success with songs such as ‘Oi Valitses’. Throughout his career, he collaborated with prominent artists including Kaiti Grey and Marinella, and worked with major composers.

In 1965, he made the decision to withdraw from nightlife venues, seeking a different life away from the stage. Despite a period of absence from recording due to disputes with the record industry, he returned in 1987 to strong public support. He famously described his connection to his audience as ‘a secret agreement’ and identified himself through his music, stating, ‘I am my songs’.
