Stella Juva solar ambulance completes field testing in Kenya
Students from Solar Team Eindhoven at the Eindhoven University of Technology have developed Stella Juva, the world’s first solar-powered ambulance. The vehicle is designed to bring medical care directly to remote areas that lack reliable electricity, fuel, or infrastructure.
During a practical field test in the Narok region of Kenya, conducted in collaboration with Amref Health Africa, the ambulance traveled over 800 kilometers. The vehicle utilizes integrated solar panels and a 50 kWh battery, allowing it to operate even after sunset. When stationary, the ambulance can deploy additional side panels to generate extra power and provide shade for patients.
The mobile unit is equipped with medical technology including X-ray, ultrasound, an automated defibrillator, and a cooling device for vaccine transport. While the team encountered a broken steering component during the rugged terrain test, the part was replaced within thirty minutes, allowing the mission to continue.
