Stella Juva solar-powered ambulance begins field trials in Kenya

Stella Juva, a solar-powered ambulance designed by students from Eindhoven University of Technology, has begun field testing in Kenya. Developed in collaboration with Amref Health Africa and solar technology company AIKO, the vehicle is designed to provide medical services to remote communities lacking reliable access to fuel or electricity.

The ambulance functions as a mobile healthcare station featuring a climate-controlled cabin, ultrasound equipment, X-ray systems for tuberculosis screening, and rapid diagnostic tools for malaria. It also includes a high-efficiency refrigeration system for storing vaccines and medicines. Utilizing AIKO’s high-efficiency ABC solar cells, the vehicle can reportedly achieve a range of up to 715 kilometres on a sunny day, supported by a substantial battery system for use when sunlight is unavailable.

During the launch in Kenya, Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira praised the innovation for combining renewable energy with emergency healthcare, noting its potential to reduce fossil fuel dependence and lower operating costs for healthcare systems. The testing phase will involve navigating difficult terrain in regions including Nakuru, Kajiado, and Narok to evaluate the vehicle's performance in real-world medical scenarios.
