Stella Miles Franklin and the legacy of My Brilliant Career

Stella Miles Franklin, a pioneering Australian author and feminist, is being highlighted through the lens of her literary legacy and a new Netflix adaptation of her debut novel, ‘My Brilliant Career’.

Originally published in 1901, the novel was based on Franklin’s own experiences growing up in the Snowy Mountains. To avoid gender bias from patriarchal publishers, she initially used the masculine pen name Miles Franklin. Despite her efforts to remain anonymous, her identity was inadvertently revealed by her mentor, Henry Lawson, in the book's preface.

While early critics offered mixed or patronizing reviews, the novel resonated deeply with young Australian women of the era who identified with the protagonist Sybylla Melvyn’s struggle for creative independence against societal expectations. The work is now revered as a groundbreaking feminist text and has seen various adaptations, including a notable 1979 film.
