Stellantis Brampton plant sale sparks Unifor bargaining suspension

Unifor has suspended contract negotiations with Stellantis following the automaker's decision to explore selling its idled Brampton, Ontario, assembly plant to defense contractor Roshel. The union, which represents roughly 9,000 Stellantis workers in Canada, has demanded federal intervention to prevent the facility's closure and sale. A strike remains a possibility as the current collective agreement is set to expire on September 20.

Stellantis previously planned to retool the Brampton site for Jeep Compass production, but shifted that manufacturing to the United States in response to U.S. tariffs. While Roshel aims to transform the site into a defense manufacturing hub that could employ over 2,000 people, Unifor argues the move threatens automotive jobs, wages, and pensions.

The Canadian government has also weighed in, noting that Stellantis could be required to repay hundreds of millions of dollars in public subsidies if it fails to meet specific production and employment commitments. Previous support for the Brampton and Windsor plants included up to 710 million dollars in combined federal and provincial funding.
