Stellantis considers sale or closure of Brampton Assembly plant

Stellantis is considering the closure and sale of its Brampton Assembly plant in Ontario, Canada, according to the Unifor trade union. The automaker reportedly informed the union on August 12, 2026, of its intent to begin discussions with another firm regarding a potential sale.

The facility has been idle since late 2023 following the end of production for Dodge and Chrysler models. A planned retooling project to produce the next-generation Jeep Compass was halted in early 2025, with production for that model ultimately being relocated to Belvidere, Illinois.

Approximately 2,200 workers represented by Unifor Local 1285 have been on layoff since the plant's idling, currently receiving 70 percent of their regular wages. The union has expressed concern that the relocation of Jeep production violates previous agreements and commitments related to federal and provincial government funding. While Stellantis has not issued a formal written notice of closure—which would require a 12-month warning period under the current collective agreement—the company stated it is focused on finding a sustainable manufacturing solution for the site.

Economic pressures, including potential impacts from U.S. auto tariffs, are cited as contributing factors to the uncertainty surrounding the plant's future.
