Stellantis considers sale and closure of Brampton assembly plant

The Unifor union has announced that Stellantis is seriously considering the closure and sale of its Brampton Assembly plant in Ontario, Canada. The facility has been idled since 2023 following the company's decision in October 2025 to shift Jeep Compass production to the United States.

Unifor National President Lana Payne described the potential move as a 'gut punch' to the approximately 2,200 workers represented by local 1285. While Stellantis has not issued a formal written notice of closure, the automaker indicated it is prepared to open discussions with another firm regarding a potential sale of the plant.

In response, a Stellantis spokesperson stated that the company is focused on finding a 'sustainable manufacturing solution' for the Brampton site and is preparing for upcoming collective agreement negotiations with the union.

The situation unfolds amid heightened trade tensions, as Canada and the United States engage in negotiations regarding automotive sector tariffs, with new 50 per cent tariffs set to be enacted on August 19.
