Stellantis patents system to eject overheating EV batteries

Stellantis (via FCA US) has filed a patent in the United States for a “high-voltage battery rapid release system” designed to improve safety in electric vehicles during thermal emergencies. The system aims to physically separate the main traction battery from the vehicle if it experiences overheating, damage, or other thermal anomalies.

According to the patent, the ejection process can be triggered by the driver, passengers, or emergency responders using various interfaces such as levers, physical buttons, touchscreens, or switches located inside the cabin or in the trunk. Once activated, the system would sever both the electrical and mechanical connections between the high-voltage battery and the vehicle.

The patent describes two potential technical solutions for the separation: a chassis equipped with sliding elements or a system utilizing pyrotechnic fasteners for rapid release. To ensure safety after the battery is expelled, the vehicle is designed to switch to a 12V battery system, providing enough power to allow the vehicle to drive a limited distance away from the hazardous battery pack.
