Stellantis signs MOU to sell Brampton plant as union talks stall

Stellantis has signed a memorandum of understanding with Canadian armored vehicle manufacturer Roshel regarding the potential sale of its idled Brampton, Ontario, assembly plant. Trevor Longley, CEO of Stellantis Canada, stated the company is exploring multiple options for the facility, which has been inactive since 2023, to restore sustainable operations and preserve its strategic role in Canada’s manufacturing sector.

Simultaneously, contract negotiations between Stellantis and the union Unifor have reached an impasse. Unifor has paused talks, citing the company’s proposal to close and sell the Brampton plant as a primary obstacle. The union expressed concerns that the sale threatens the wages, pensions, and benefits of its members and would deal a “devastating blow” to Canada’s industrial sector and the local economy in Ontario. The current collective agreement is set to expire on September 20.
