Stellantis Warns Drivers Over Union Ban on New Gordie Howe Bridge

The Gordie Howe International Bridge, a 2.5‑km, six‑lane cable‑stayed span crossing the Detroit River between Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario, was officially opened in late July 2026. The project, built by the Bridging North America consortium (ACS Infrastructure, Fluor, Aecon) at a cost of about €5.5 billion ($6.4 billion), provides a new NAFTA corridor and includes a $12 Canadian toll for commercial vehicles.

Stellantis’ logistics arm FCA Transport has issued a directive to drivers who are members of UAW Local 212, warning that using the new bridge could trigger disciplinary action and possible customs delays. Union president JT Barrett posted on Facebook that crossing with company semi‑tractors would be sanctioned, emphasizing the move is economic, not political. Stellantis confirmed it will continue to use the older Ambassador Bridge under a fixed‑fee contract while evaluating “just‑in‑time” use of the Gordie Howe crossing. ACS CEO Juan Santamaría said the bridge “strengthens trade, improves resilience and creates lasting value for two nations.”
