Stellenbosch shooting in Kayamandi kills two police officers, injures five

On 26 July, a mass shooting erupted in the Kayamandi neighbourhood of Stellenbosch, South Africa. Police were called to 7th Avenue around 17:30 after reports of gunfire. Responding officers encountered an unidentified gunman who opened fire on them; the officers returned fire and the suspects fled.

Seven people were shot in total. Two South African Police Service (SAPS) members were pronounced dead, while five others – two civilians and three additional victims – suffered serious injuries. Police later discovered four unidentified men with fatal wounds at the scene. A 9 mm pistol was recovered for forensic analysis.

The Western Cape Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit has opened investigations into four counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder. Acting Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Major General Luyanda Damoyi condemned the attack and urged the public to provide information. No motive has been established and no arrests have been made as the investigation continues.
