Stem cell therapy offers alternative to knee replacement in India

Medical professionals in India are utilizing stem cell therapy as a potential alternative to knee replacement surgery for patients with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis. Dr. Deepak Kumar KS of Kamakshi Memorial Hospitals is advocating for a knee-preservation-first approach to delay or avoid surgical intervention where clinically appropriate.

In collaboration with Dr. Sathish Kumar Thangamani, an allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell therapy is being administered to selected patients. This regenerative therapy, manufactured by Stempeutics Research and distributed by Cipla, has received approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI). The treatment aims to leverage anti-inflammatory and cartilage-protective properties to manage Grade II and III osteoarthritis.
