STEM education initiatives expand in Sarawak, Malaysia

Efforts to expand STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education and practical application are being emphasized in Sarawak, Malaysia.

In Batu Kitang, assemblyman Dato Ir. Lo Khere Chiang advocated for bringing STEM programmes directly into communities to provide children with exposure to emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, automation, and biotechnology. The Kimia ke Desa x TEGAS STEM Playground 2026, organized by the Department of Chemistry Malaysia, Sarawak, and TEGAS, aimed to move learning beyond the classroom through direct participation and hands-on activities.

In Kuching, the PETRA X Young Innovator Challenge 2026 focused on translating theoretical STEM learning into real-world projects and solutions. Representing Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof, Irwan Zulkarnain Muhammad Hasbie noted that the platform encourages students to identify problems and develop innovative solutions. The program involved 14 schools in the Kuching area, aiming to foster creativity and teamwork among students.
