Stena Line orders two hybrid ferries for Sweden-Denmark route

Stena Line has ordered two new hybrid E-Flexer ferries to serve the Gothenburg–Frederikshavn route between Sweden and Denmark. The vessels are scheduled to enter service in 2030 and will replace the long-serving STENA DANICA and STENA JUTLANDICA.

Each 214-meter vessel will have a capacity for 1,500 passengers and include three car decks: one for passenger vehicles and two dedicated to freight. The ships will utilize hybrid technology, allowing them to combine conventional fuel with electricity. Once the necessary charging infrastructure is established in the ports of Frederikshavn and Gothenburg, the ferries will be capable of operating on 100 percent electric power.

CEO Niclas Mårtensson described the order as a “historic investment” aimed at modernizing the fleet and meeting stricter environmental requirements. The new vessels are designed to increase freight capacity and offer flexibility, as they can also be deployed on other daytime routes within the company’s network.
