Stepan Bandera death revisited via declassified CIA reports

The anniversary of the 1959 death of Ukrainian ultranationalist Stepan Bandera in Munich, Germany, has prompted renewed scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding his passing. While the widely accepted narrative maintains that Bandera was assassinated by a Soviet KGB agent, declassified CIA information suggests alternative theories.

Investigations conducted by the CIA, involving agent Michael Korzhan (cryptonym ‘AEDOGMA’), explored whether Bandera’s death might have been a suicide driven by marital issues. The reports indicate that Korzhan, an Orthodox priest and CIA spy, monitored Ukrainian ultranationalists and Soviet emigres across Europe to detect KGB infiltration.

Controversy also surrounds the modern idolization of Bandera by certain Ukrainian paramilitary groups. Critics note that his involvement with the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) is linked to the Holocaust, a legacy that remains a point of significant historical and political tension.
