Stephan Dewar jailed for stealing £50,000 from father

Stephan Dewar, 31, has been sentenced to 24 months in prison after stealing approximately £50,000 from his vulnerable father, Andrew Dewar, over a three-year period between 2019 and 2022.

According to proceedings at Dundee Sheriff Court, Stephan Dewar exploited his father’s trust by using his bank details, which he had originally obtained to assist with a loan. He secretly established online banking accounts and impersonated his father during telephone calls with the bank. The victim, who suffered a stroke in 2007 and does not use the internet or online banking, was targeted for his substantial pension.

The stolen funds were used to finance a lifestyle involving food from Greggs, entertainment, and OnlyFans. Sheriff George Way described the actions as a ‘despicable crime,’ noting that the defendant breached a profound obligation to protect his parent. The fraud was discovered after the victim’s uncle, who holds power of attorney, noticed significant discrepancies in the accounts.
