Stephanie Amos arrested in 1992 Pine Bluff newborn homicide cold case

Stephanie Amos, 52, has been arrested on a capital murder charge in connection with the 1992 death of a newborn baby in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. The arrest follows a renewed investigation by the Pine Bluff Police Department and the Arkansas State Police.

The case dates back to June 22, 1992, when a newborn Black male was found dead in the 1000 block of South Mulberry Street. An examination determined the infant died from craniocerebral trauma, and the death was ruled a homicide.

Investigators reexamined the case using DNA evidence from the infant, which was entered into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). The DNA analysis generated a lead involving Amos, who lived in the area at the time of the incident. Further investigation revealed that individuals from that period recalled Amos being pregnant. During interviews, Amos reportedly acknowledged that the infant was hers and that she had disposed of the baby. Subsequent DNA testing confirmed she was the biological mother. The case has been submitted to the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review.
