Stephen A. Smith addresses language retraction and broadcast errors

ESPN broadcaster Stephen A. Smith has addressed several recent controversies regarding his commentary and public statements. Smith formally retracted his use of the term “gangster” to describe NBA player Kawhi Leonard following criticism that the phrasing carried excessive negativity. While he maintained his critique of Leonard’s business dealings and salary cap situation, he committed to refraining from using that specific label in the future.

In a separate instance, Smith faced scrutiny during an ESPN broadcast from Brazil. While covering an NFL matchup at Maracanã Stadium, Smith referred to “Brazilian” as a language rather than Portuguese. The error was noted by viewers and addressed by his co-host on “First Take.”

Additionally, former NBA player and political candidate Royce White expressed praise for Smith. White, who has transitioned into Minnesota politics, commended Smith for his willingness to voice controversial opinions on social issues, such as transgender eligibility in women’s sports, despite potential risks to his commercial standing.
