Stephen A. Smith defends White House meeting with Donald Trump

ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith has defended his decision to attend a private White House dinner with President Donald Trump on October 15. Appearing on ‘The View’, Smith addressed criticism regarding Trump’s record on race and his impact on marginalized communities. Smith argued that engaging with the president is a necessary means to advocate for critical issues, including funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), unemployment rates among Black women, and concerns regarding the Protect College Sports Act.

During the exchange, Smith emphasized that regardless of personal or political disagreements, the president holds significant authority and will remain in office for years to come. He stated he would not apologize for attempting to use every available measure to serve the interests of his community. The dinner, which also included comedian Bill Maher and musician Kid Rock, reportedly lasted over four hours.

Comedian D.L. Hughley has criticized the meeting, questioning the transparency of the discussion and suggesting that such engagements may not yield meaningful policy changes. Additionally, Smith addressed claims regarding a lack of political access and noted that a White House phone ban prevented him from recording the exchange, a point of contention raised by media figures like Charlamagne Tha God.
