Stephen A. Smith discusses Pat McAfee’s unique ESPN independence

Stephen A. Smith has addressed the structural differences between his role at ESPN and that of Pat McAfee, noting that McAfee possesses a level of independence Smith has never had. During an interview with Front Office Sports, Smith explained that the distinction lies in ownership: while ESPN owns “First Take,” McAfee owns his own platforms and leases them to the network.

This arrangement provides McAfee with significant autonomy and leverage. While Smith is a traditional corporate employee with a reported annual salary of approximately $20 million, McAfee operates as an independent entrepreneur. Reports indicate McAfee earns roughly $30 million annually through a split deal involving his show and appearances on “College GameDay.”

Furthermore, recent reports suggest ESPN is negotiating a contract extension with McAfee that could reach between $60 million and $65 million per year. This massive figure is intended to cover McAfee’s entire production crew, overhead, and studio staff, representing a departure from ESPN’s traditional salary structures.
