Stephen A. Smith disputes NABJ award and announces HBCU broadcast deal

ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith is publicly disputing the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) after the organization presented him with its ‘Thumbs Down’ award. The NABJ cited a ‘recurring public pattern of disparaging commentary directed at prominent Black women’ as the reason for the recognition.

Smith has labeled the award a ‘hit job’ and ‘highly offensive,’ arguing that the claims are untrue. During an appearance on Fox News’ ‘Hannity,’ Smith suggested the award was politically motivated, targeting his criticisms of certain figures. He maintained that his remarks represent a ‘difference of opinion’ rather than disparagement.

Amid the controversy, Smith announced that his production company is nearing a deal to broadcast HBCU basketball games. He stated the project is part of a broader effort to create opportunities for Black talent, including producers and on-air personalities. The NABJ has issued a statement standing by its decision.
