Donalds, a Republican candidate for governor of Florida, and Smith maintain a personal friendship, which a campaign official confirmed. The Donalds campaign characterized Smith’s comments as evidence of the congressman’s ability to attract a broad coalition of voters beyond the traditional Republican base by focusing on issues such as public safety and affordability.

According to a James Madison Institute poll, Donalds holds a significant lead among likely Republican primary voters. The congressman has also received an endorsement from Donald Trump.
