Stephen A. Smith disputes NABJ ‘Thumbs Down’ award

The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) presented ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith with its ‘Thumbs Down’ award during its annual convention in Atlanta. The award is intended to recognize conduct that harms Black journalists, weakens newsroom equity, or reinforces damaging betrayals of Black people.

NABJ stated that Smith has established a “recurring public pattern of disparaging commentary directed at prominent Black women across politics, sports, and media.” The organization argued that such commentary undermines respectful representation and conflicts with its mission of inclusive portrayals of Black communities. Other recipients of the award included CBS News, The Washington Post, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, and media executive DuJuan McCoy.

Smith has strongly rejected the honor, calling it “utterly ridiculous” and a “flat out lie.” He responded via social media and on his YouTube show, promising a public rebuttal. Smith argued that his commentary constitutes differences of opinion rather than disparagement and suggested the NABJ is targeting him personally. He also noted his long-standing history of participating in and supporting NABJ conventions.
