Stephen Bliss discusses his legacy as Grand Theft Auto artist
British artist and illustrator Stephen Bliss, known for his work as a senior artist at Rockstar Games from 2001 to 2016, has shared insights into his creative evolution. Bliss was instrumental in defining the visual language of the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) franchise, creating imagery that has become a significant part of contemporary pop culture.
Following his departure from Rockstar Games, Bliss has expanded his artistic practice to include murals, canvas paintings, and urban materials. His recent projects include the development of the Fear City universe and works created from layers of advertising posters salvaged from New York City walls.
Ahead of his appearance at Lucca Comics & Games, Bliss reflected on the emotional connection players have with his work. While he expressed initial discomfort with being identified solely as ‘the Grand Theft Auto artist’, he noted that hearing how his illustrations inspired others to pursue art has helped him embrace his legacy.
