Stephen Fleming addresses Ben Stokes retirement and Ashes ambitions

Newly appointed England Test coach Stephen Fleming has addressed speculation regarding a potential return of former captain Ben Stokes for the upcoming Ashes series. Following a meeting with Stokes at Durham, Fleming stated that it would be “wrong” to attempt to persuade the 35-year-old to reverse his international retirement, noting that Stokes appears “at peace” with his decision.

Fleming, who succeeds Brendon McCullum, expressed a strong desire to improve England's standing and stated his ambition to defeat Australia. He noted that he shares the English public's “obsession” with the Ashes rivalry. While Stokes has continued playing for Durham and signed with the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League, Fleming indicated he will respect the former captain's decision to step away from the international red-ball game.
