Stephen Flynn reveals early resignation as Westminster leader

Stephen Flynn has revealed that he resigned as the SNP Westminster group leader several weeks before the Holyrood election took place. Speaking at an Edinburgh Fringe event, Flynn stated that his resignation occurred three to five weeks prior to the election, before he knew he would be elected as an MSP.

Flynn explained that an internal transition to the new Westminster leader, Dave Doogan, occurred behind the scenes and only became public after the election results. He noted that his decision to step down followed the 2024 election, in which the SNP won nine seats, a decrease of 38 seats compared to the 2019 result.

Regarding his motivations, Flynn cited a responsibility to his colleagues and the party to ensure a positive transition. He also expressed a personal desire to focus on independence and spend more time with his family.
