Stephen Harper backs Canada's decision to end U.S. trade negotiations
Former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has endorsed the federal government’s decision to terminate trade negotiations with the United States. Speaking at the Canada Investment Summit in Toronto, Harper argued that the move was necessary to protect Canada’s sovereignty and industrial capacity from the demands of the current U.S. administration.
Trade discussions collapsed in August after Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended negotiations and recalled Canadian representatives. Carney accused U.S. officials of introducing unacceptable demands at the final stage of talks. The breakdown has led to significant economic friction, including the imposition of 50 per cent U.S. tariffs on billions of dollars in Canadian exports, which prompted Canada to implement retaliatory tariffs on American goods.
Harper emphasized that while the decision is difficult, Canada must pursue a strategy of diminished reliance on the United States to maintain its independence. He noted that the current economic integration is increasingly incompatible with Canada's separate sovereignty.
