Stephen King's cinematic legacy and legal disputes
Stephen King's literary works have a long history of cinematic adaptation, ranging from classic horror to more recent projects. While many of his stories explore themes of monsters and human depravity, some adaptations, such as the 2025 film ‘The Life of Chuck’, offer departures from his traditional horror roots.
However, the relationship between King and Hollywood has not always been seamless. The author famously took legal action against New Line regarding the film ‘The Lawnmower Man’. King expressed intense frustration because the studio used his name to market the film despite it bearing little to no resemblance to his original story, which contained no elements of virtual reality or computers. King described the marketing tactic as a ‘scam’ and successfully sued for $2.5 million in compensation.
