Stephen Mayne campaigns for Australian retail shareholder rights
Stephen Mayne, a long-standing shareholder activist in Australia, continues his campaign to improve corporate governance and protect retail investors. Over the last two years, Mayne has interrogated public company boards at 314 meetings and campaigned for 28 board seats in the past eight months alone.
A primary focus of his activism is the treatment of retail shareholders during capital raisings. Mayne argues that many companies use share placements to issue new stock at a discount, which dilutes existing shareholders while often excluding retail investors. He has noted a decline in retail-friendly mechanisms, such as Pro-Rata Accelerated Institutional, Tradeable Retail Entitlement Offers (PAITREOs), in favor of what he describes as “quick and dirty, non-pro rata placements.”
While some view his persistent questioning as an irritant, others in the financial community, including journalist Alan Kohler and fund manager Geoff Wilson, have praised his role in holding companies accountable.
