Stephen the Great defeats Polish forces at Battle of Cosmin Forest
On October 26, 1497, Moldovan forces led by Stephen the Great defeated the Polish army of King John Albert at the Battle of Cosmin Forest. The engagement took place in the northern Bukovina region, in what is present-day Ukraine, during the Polish army's retreat following a failed siege of Suceava.
The conflict arose from complex diplomatic and strategic tensions between Moldova and Poland regarding border territories and regional influence. While the Polish expedition aimed to combat Ottoman influence and reclaim the strategic ports of Chilia and Cetatea Albă, the Moldovan victory served to consolidate the principality's military prestige and state independence.
