Steubenville coach and teacher Joe Pierro dies after lightning strike

Joe Pierro, a longtime teacher and coach in Steubenville, Ohio, died at age 60 after being struck by lightning while mowing his lawn on September 4. The incident occurred during thunderstorms and was recorded by the National Lightning Safety Council as the 14th lightning-related fatality in the United States for 2026.

Pierro had retired only three weeks prior to his death, concluding a career of more than 30 years with Steubenville City Schools. During his tenure, he served as a special education teacher and coached both football and baseball. Colleagues and school officials described him as a dedicated mentor who helped students build confidence both in the classroom and on the athletic field.

Steubenville High School honored Pierro by dedicating its Friday night football game to his memory. His family and community members remembered him for his kindness, generosity, and easygoing personality.
