Stevan Mokranjac: Legacy of the Serbian musical bard

September 28 marks the anniversary of the death of Stevan Stojanović Mokranjac, a foundational figure in Serbian classical and choral music. Born in Negotin in 1856, Mokranjac studied in Munich, Rome, and Leipzig before returning to Belgrade to shape the nation's musical landscape.

Mokranjac served as the conductor of the Belgrade Singing Society, bringing it international recognition, and was a professor and director of the Serbian Music School. His contributions include the establishment of Serbia's first string quartet and his election as a member of the Serbian Royal Academy.

His most significant works include ‘Rukoveti’, a collection of 15 song cycles based on folk motifs from Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, and Bulgaria. He is also renowned for his liturgical compositions, such as ‘Heruvimska pesma’ and ‘Opelo’, which integrated traditional Orthodox chants into formal musical structures.
